Cascina Val Liberata
Cascina Val Liberata is located in the village of Villamiroglio in northern Monferrato in the heights of a valley surrounded by forests and fields. The organic and biodynamic vineyard was founded in 2014 by Deirdre O’Brien and Maurizio Caffer.
Today, Deirdre and Maurizio tend to the three local grape varieties Slarina, Nebbiolo and Grignolino. Since Slarina, an old Piedmontese grape variety, is low yielding, it has generally had to give way to varieties with a greater yield, such as Barbera. But Deirdre and Maurizio are convinced of the elegant aromas, the fine tannin structure and the potential of this forgotten grape. For that reason, Slarina became the first variety that the couple planted in 2014, while Nebbiolo and Grignolino quickly followed suit.
Cascina Val Liberata makes wine that shows that Nebbiolo and Slarina just as Grignolino can be easily drinkable with an unmanipulated expression rather than the more widespread pursuit of increased concentration.
