Jean-Marie Berrux

Burgundy

Jean-Marie Berrux is originally from Savoie, but his initial career path in the advertising industry led him to Paris, where his interest in wine began to grow. In 1999, he decided to quit his job to study oenology in Beaune. In 2004, after a few years of working for other winemakers, he got the opportunity to buy 1.5 hectares of Chardonnay around Meursault, and since then Jean-Marie has produced wines with a unique intensity, freshness and minerality. The wines are called Le Têtu and Le Petit Têtu, which means the (little) stubborn one, and refers to Jean-Marie himself and his decision to leave his old life behind to start a new one.

Jean-Marie Berrux lives in Meursault, while the vineyards are located in Corpeau close to Puligny-Montrachet. They are cultivated by hand using biodynamic methods and with the utmost care and knowledge. The cellar is dug out under the house, where his work is inspired by his uncle in Savoie and the winemakers that he has met along the way. This means a low intervention approach completely without added sulphur. Instead, the wines are gently and meticulously guided by using naturally occurring yeast and aging in oak barrels. The result is very convincing year after year, which has created a high demand for his wines, however the production is remarkably small.
