Chevreux-Bournazel - La Parcelle
We have been drinking the wines of Chevreux-Bournazel – La Parcelle with enormous pleasure for many years, so when the opportunity to work with the domaine arose, it was an easy decision. This is one of those rare, uncompromising Champagne projects where every aspect is shaped by the people behind it. The wines are deeply expressive, full of energy and character and completely transparent to their place of origin. They offer a remarkable amount of Champagne for the money – if only there were more bottles to go around.
La Parcelle is the work of Stéphanie Chevreux and Julien Bournazel, who spent years farming vineyards for other growers throughout Champagne, specializing in organic and biodynamic viticulture. In 2012, they acquired a tiny 0.4-hectare parcel in Barzy-sur-Marne – a vineyard Julien knew inside out after caring for it for many years – and La Parcelle was born. Since then, a second parcel in Connigis has joined the estate, and the Pinot Meunier vines are all tended according to biodynamic principles with biodiversity and living soils at the heart of their approach.
The same philosophy carries through to the cellar. Work is guided by the lunar calendar, and intervention is kept to an absolute minimum. The wines ferment with indigenous yeasts, without any fining or filtration, are aged in old barrels and bottled without dosage. The result is Champagne that combines intensity and precision with a sense of ease and natural vitality that is a very rare find.
