La Biancara di Angiolino Maule
Since acquiring a vineyard in Gambellara in Veneto in the early 1980s, Angiolino Maule has been an absolute pioneer of a more sustainable approach to viticulture in Italy. The importance of his work for an entire generation of young winegrowers who wanted to go in another direction, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, cannot be underestimated.
Today, with the help of sons Francesco and Alessandro, he grows about nine hectares, planted primarily with the local white grape variety Garganega and small quantities of Trebbiano, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Maule soughs grain, beans and clover between the rows, uses the vineyard’s own organic compost and sprays with plant extracts in an effort to reduce the amount of copper and sulphur used in the vineyards.
In the cellar, the philosophy includes no use of cultured yeast, no temperature control, no filtration or fining and only minimal amounts of sulphur when bottling if considered necessary at all. La Biancara di Angiolino Maule’s wines have for many years had a central place in our portfolio, as they consistently show an impressive quality at a very fair price. Angiolino Maule gives you purity and precision in a somewhat slightly understated packaging. The wines offer elegance and lightness rather than being full-bodied and powerful. They go down quickly, but still show enough character to make you want to drink another glass.
