Silvio Messana

Tuscany

Next to the vineyard Montesecondo, Silvio Messana also buys grapes, which he releases under his own name to explore vinification from other regions. Silvio is originally from Tuscany but has lived in New York for a number of years, and in 2000 he released his first vintage. The first harvest of the négociant project was in 2019.

The vineyards are cultivated by winegrowers, who Silvio has a long and trusting relationship with. Some of them are biodynamically certified, but common to all of them is that they have a dedicated and conscientious approach to the work in the vineyards where Sangiovese, Colorino, Canaiolo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Trebbiano, Malvasia and Vernaccia grow.

In the cellar, Silvio Messana follows the same principles as in Montesecondo. This means spontaneous fermentation and no fining or filtration, just as sulphur is only added before bottling if it is deemed necessary at all. The style is juicy and easily drinkable but at the same time has an underlying seriousness as well as a purpose of letting the grapes express the style that is traditional to the area.
