Enfield Wine Co.


Enfield Wine Co. was founded in 2010 by John Lockwood who considered it a side-line business for the first few years, while managing vineyards on the Sonoma Coast and the Russian River for Failla Wines. In 2013, he took the plunge, quit his job and made Enfield Wine Co. his primary occupation.

The production is quite small just like John intend it to be. His greatest passion is the small pockets of unique terroirs that can still be found in California when you do not depend on harvesting in large quantities. John does not own any vineyards himself, but instead works closely with a number of independent farmers that are driven by the same desire to let the unique expression of each vineyard show through.

The vinification is low-tech and hands-off: Spontaneous fermentation, storage in 500-600 litre barrels to limit the expression of wood, no fining or filtration and nothing added along the way, except for a limited dose of sulphur after the malolactic fermentation has completed. John does not make wine for drinking quickly, but instead seeks a classic and serious expression with structure and tannin that still has lower alcohol and more vigour than what you most often find in the area.
